Metro Vancouver Millennials Shatter Workplace Behaviour Myths

Employees aged 18-35 are more satisfied with their current job and opportunities for advancement than those aged 36-51.

Vancouver, BC – A detailed analysis of the third annual Insights West “Dream Employer” poll shatters several myths about the Millennial workforce in Metro Vancouver.

The online survey of more than 2,000 employed Metro Vancouverites shows that Millennial employees (aged 18-to-35) are significantly more satisfied and more likely to recommend their current employer than the members of Generation X (aged 36-to-51).

In fact, 25% of Millennial employees are “delighted” with their current workplace, compared to just 19% for Generation X.

There is also no discernible difference on the issue work-life balance, with 78% of Millennials and 79% of Generation X employees feeling that flexible work hours have “a lot of impact” on their decision to work for a particular employer.

Also, while Millennials have been mentioned extensively as being more committed to helping those in need, the survey shows that 19% of them “strongly agree” that they are more likely to contribute more to charitable activities at work—consistent with what is observed among Generation X (14%) and Baby Boomers/ Traditionalists (17%).

“Much has been written about the purported entitlement of Millennials,” says Steve Mossop, President at Insights West. “However, the survey shows that the views of Millennials on issues such as pay raises are very similar to the feelings of Generation X, Baby Boomers and Traditionalists.”

Another myth that is mentioned often is the notion of Millennials being frustrated with their future career opportunities. The survey found that 57% of Millennial employees in Metro Vancouver are “satisfied” with their opportunities for advancement—including 19% who claim to be “very satisfied”. This is a significantly higher proportion than what is observed with Generation X (9%).
