British Columbians Ponder Their “Dream Employers”

Better compensation, flexibility and medical benefits would move British Columbians to join a new company.

Vancouver, BC – The second annual “Dream Employer” poll, conducted by Insights West in partnership with Miles Employment Group and the Vancouver Board of Trade, reveals that three-in-ten employed British Columbians are not particularly satisfied with their workplaces and have a very specific wish-list of the top employers they would like to work for.

Insights West conducted its largest study in British Columbia, surveying 3,328 adult British Columbians, to determine the answer to the question: If you could work for any company in B.C., who would it be?

Each of our 3,328 respondents tallied up to three mentions for their dream employer, and of the 7,070 votes tallied, 41% were for private sector companies, while 39% of mentions were public companies, 5% non-profit, and 15% chose self-employed.

The survey also shows that 20% of employed British Columbians are “delighted” with their current job (-4 since 2013), while almost half (48%) are “happy” (+3) and 32% are “not so happy” (+1).

In addition, while one third of employed British Columbians (33%, -14) say they have no plans to abandon their current job, half of them (50%, +10) would consider leaving it if the right opportunity came along and 15% (+5) are actively looking for a new job.

“In our second year of conducting the survey, we had a few repeat winners and a significant number of new entries in our Dream Employer Award,” says Steve Mossop, President of Insights West. “Some of the new entrants are perhaps unconventional, but we had a significant number of British Columbians register their votes to over 75 companies that were listed as being deserving winners from unaided mentions from last year. We are excited about revealing the rank-order and top winners at our Vancouver Board of Trade event on February 3rd.”

The survey also showed that compensation (82%) is the most impactful benefit for job seekers, followed by flexibility of work hours (73%), better medical benefits (72%), better bonuses and profit sharing opportunities (69%) and more opportunities for advancement (68%).

The survey, designed and hosted by Insights West, was conducted online between November 18 and December 9, 2014. A total of 3,328 eligible and complete responses were compiled during the survey period. Data was weighted by region, age, gender and employment status to ensure the sample matches known population proportions from Census Canada data for B.C.
